Oprah Winfrey is an American media executive, actress, talk show host, television producer, and philanthropist. She is best known for her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was the highest-rated program of its kind in history and ran in national syndication for 25 years from 1986 to 2011. Winfrey is also the founder and chairman of Harpo Productions and the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). She has been ranked as the richest African American of the 20th century and the greatest black philanthropist in American history. Winfrey has also been influential in American society, particularly for her support of various liberal causes. Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, and raised in an inner-city neighbourhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She began her career in media as a radio host in Nashville, Tennessee, and later in Baltimore, Maryland, where she hosted a local version of a popular talk show called "People Are Talking." In 1976, she was recruited by a Chicago TV station to host a morning talk show, which eventually led to the development of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."
